Belt tooth skip under heavy doors

We’ve pulled apart units where the belt jumped a tooth on the sprocket. Belt delamination from heat cycles

In West Vancouver and Squamish, garages see wide temperature swings. The steel cords inside the belt expand and contract at a different rate than the polyurethane jacket. After five or six years, the jacket can separate from the cords near the trolley attachment point. You’ll see a bubble or a ripple in the belt surface. Trolley carriage wear

Opener hums but trolley doesn’t move. The motor is getting power but the drive isn’t engaging. Could be a stripped sprocket, a snapped belt, or a seized motor bearing. We pull the cover and spin the motor shaft by hand. If it’s stiff, the motor is done. If it spins free, we check the belt and sprocket.

Camera feed is black at night. Night vision IR LEDs may have failed. Cover the lens with your hand — the red glow should be visible through your fingers. No glow means the IR array is dead. Module swap fixes it.

LED ring flickers or strobes. Driver board fault. Unplug the opener for thirty seconds to reset the logic. If it comes back flickering, the driver is cooked. Board replacement required.

Battery backup beeps every thirty seconds. The backup battery is dead or disconnected. The 6690L uses a 12V 5Ah SLA pack mounted in the head unit. We test it under load. If voltage drops below 10.5V during a cycle, we swap the pack. Takes ten minutes.

Wi-Fi drops daily. Usually a 2.4 GHz channel congestion issue. We change the router channel to 1, 6, or 11 and disable band steering. If the signal is weak at the garage, we install a wired access point or a powerline adapter.

How the 6690L compares to other models

The 6690L replaces the 87504-267. That older unit had a similar belt drive and a 1 1/4 HP motor, but it lacked the integrated camera, the 2,000 lumen ring, and the battery backup. If you’re upgrading from an 87504-267, the rail dimensions are identical, so we can often reuse the existing rail and just swap the head unit. That saves about an hour of labour.

Compared to the mid-range 8550W, the 6690L adds the camera, the brighter lighting, battery backup, and the lifetime belt warranty. The 8550W uses the same steel-reinforced belt and the same DC motor platform, so the noise level is nearly identical. The difference is the feature set and the warranty coverage. If you don’t need the camera and you’re fine with a 1,200 lumen light, the 8550W saves a few hundred dollars up front. But you lose the lifetime belt warranty — the 8550W carries a five-year belt warranty instead.

A service call in Kerrisdale

The camera module runs on a separate voltage rail from the main logic. A marginal solder joint on that rail can crack with thermal cycling. When the garage cools at night, the joint opens and the camera loses power. The opener keeps running because it’s on a different rail. We’ve fixed this by reflowing the camera power connector on the logic board, but LiftMaster now recommends a full logic board swap for reliability. We’ll test both ways and give you the option.
