Broken Spring Repair

Torsion springs are what actually lift your garage door. The opener just guides it — the spring does the work. When one breaks, you will hear a loud bang and the door will either drop or become too heavy to lift. This is the most common garage door failure we see. If you need to fix a broken garage door spring today, we carry the hardware on the truck to repair it same-day — anywhere in Metro Vancouver.

What We Do (and What We Do Not)

We replace springs in matched pairs using the correct wire diameter and turn count calculated for your door exact weight. We do not replace just the broken spring and leave the old one. Springs wear out together — if one snapped, the other is close. Mismatched spring tension causes uneven lift and puts stress on the opener, the cables, and the door itself.

We stock standard residential torsion springs and high-cycle springs (25,000+ cycle rated) for doors that get heavy use. If you want the high-cycle option — typically worth it for an attached garage with a door used 6-10 times daily — ask when you call.

DIY Warning

Garage door springs are under several hundred pounds of stored tension. A spring that releases uncontrolled can cause serious injury. This is not a repair to attempt without the right winding bars, safety knowledge, and experience with the specific spring type on your door.

Book Same-Day

Call 778-873-7282. We cover Richmond, Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, Coquitlam, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Delta, Langley, and surrounding areas. Most spring replacements take 45-90 minutes on-site.

Broken spring questions we get asked most

How can I tell it is the spring and not the opener?

The clearest test is weight. Pull the manual release with the door fully closed and try to lift it by hand. A door with a working spring feels balanced and stays where you put it. A door with a broken spring feels enormously heavy and drops if you let go. A visible gap in a coiled spring above the door is the other giveaway.

Only one spring broke. Do I need both replaced?

On a two-spring door we replace them as a pair. Both springs were installed on the same day and have taken the same number of cycles, so the second one is typically close behind the first. Replacing only the failed spring also leaves the door unbalanced until the other one goes.

What does a spring cycle rating actually mean?

One cycle is the door opening once and closing once. A standard residential spring is rated for around 10,000 cycles, which is roughly seven years at four uses a day. We also stock 25,000, 50,000 and 100,000 cycle springs, and for a busy household or a door used as the main entrance the higher rating is usually worth the small difference in cost.

Can I keep using the door until you arrive?

No. A residential garage door weighs between roughly 150 and 400 pounds, and the spring is the only thing counterbalancing that weight. With the spring broken there is nothing holding the door up, so it can come down hard and without warning. Leave it closed and do not run the opener.

My door is an odd size. Do you have a spring for it?

Very likely. Alongside standard off-the-shelf ratings we wind custom springs for doors that do not match a stock spec, which comes up regularly in older Metro Vancouver homes with non-standard openings. We measure the wire size, inside diameter and length on site and match the spring to the actual door.
