This model has been discontinued, succeeded by the 98022, so we don’t sell it as a new unit unless a dealer happens to have old stock. If you already own an 8500W, we’ll keep it running. If you’re shopping for a fresh wall-mount install, the 98022 is the current equivalent we spec and warranty.
Ideal scenarios: garages with low or obstructed ceilings, side-room clearance of at least a few inches beside the torsion shaft, and homeowners who want ceiling space back. Not a fit if your torsion shaft is non-standard, if side room is tight, or if the door uses a Wayne-Dalton TorqueMaster system — those need a different adapter kit we’d have to verify on site.

Mounting and mechanical coupling
We start by confirming the torsion shaft diameter and the available side clearance. The 8500W clamps onto a 1-inch or 1-1/4-inch shaft using the included coupling kit. If the shaft is worn, undersized, or the bearings are shot, we’ll replace the shaft and bearing plates before the opener goes on. The motor body bolts to the wall with heavy lag screws into studs or solid blocking — drywall anchors won’t hold the torque reaction. We level the unit with a torpedo level, then lock the coupling set screws to spec. A misaligned coupling will chew up the shaft keyway inside a week.
Travel limits and force programming
Limit setting on the 8500W uses the menu-driven LCD on the motor housing. We run the door up and down, teaching the open and close positions to the nearest inch. If you’re replacing a failed 8500W, the 98022 bolts to the same mounting pattern in most cases — we verify the bolt pattern on site. For a brand-new wall-mount install, we quote the 98022. We don’t install the 8500W new anymore; parts supply is drying up and LiftMaster’s technical support has shifted to the newer platform.
