What the 8365W-267 is
The 8365W-267 is a chain drive opener with a 1/2 HP AC motor. Builders put them in by the thousand because they are simple and parts are easy to get. The chain handles a busy household well.
There is no battery backup. In a power cut the door stays put until you pull the red release. The light is a single bulb socket and there is no camera. Wi Fi is built in, so it talks to the myQ app on its own. It needs a 2.4 GHz signal in the garage.
The AC motor has no soft start, so you hear a clunk when it kicks in and the chain chatters on the rail. That is normal for this opener. It is an older model, and when one is past fixing we quote a current LiftMaster model.

We put the rail together on the floor and check it is straight. The header bracket goes into solid framing, never the drywall or the door track. The head hangs from angle iron lagged into the joists, levelled both ways. A crooked head puts side load on the trolley, wears the chain unevenly and cracks the carriage.
Travel limits are set with the adjustment button on the opener. We set the down limit so the door just presses the seal, and the up limit so the trolley stops short of the stop bolt. Then the opener runs the door up and down once and sets the force by itself. We check that the door reverses on a 2x4 laid flat at the floor.
The photo eyes go no higher than six inches off the floor. We test them by passing a broom handle through the beam while the door closes. If the receiver light flickers, we line them up again. Low sun can blind the receiver at certain times of day.
Before we leave we run at least ten full cycles and show you the red release.
What wears out on a chain drive
Chain stretch
The pins and rollers in the chain wear and the chain gets longer. It sags and slaps the rail every cycle. That slap tires the rail and the trolley carriage. Once the sag passes about half an inch, it is time to adjust or replace.
Trolley carriage
The carriage is plastic, and the AC motor hits it hard every start. After enough cycles the carriage cracks. The door opens a foot and then the trolley spins free. We carry carriages. It is about an hour on site.
Sprockets
The motor sprocket and the idler sprocket at the far end of the rail wear to a hook shape, which speeds up chain wear. We check both on every visit.
Motor capacitor
When the capacitor fails, the motor hums but does not spin, or spins slowly and shuts itself off. It is a quick part to change. If someone kept pressing the button trying to force it, the motor may have overheated, and that is a bigger job.
Door stops in the wrong spot
If the door stops short or runs into the header, we run the travel setup again with the adjustment button. A stretched chain or a door out of balance is often the real cause, so we check those first.
Sensor wiring
The sensor wires run along the track. Rollers nick them, mice chew them and ladders pull them loose. We run new wire, staple it properly and use connectors that resist corrosion. In damp garages corrosion is the common one.
Symptom guide
- Opens a few inches and stops. Broken spring, cracked carriage or a door that needs its travel setup run again. We check spring balance first.
- Reverses before the floor. Photo eyes out of line or blinded by sun, a broken wire, or the down limit set too far.
- Motor runs but the chain does not move. Stripped sprocket, a sheared pin or a broken chain.
- Remote works but the wall button does not. Wall button wiring or the board input.
- Keypad works only sometimes. Usually a weak keypad battery.
- Light stays on or will not come on. A stuck relay on the board or a flattened socket tab.
8365W-267 compared with a newer opener
A current premium opener has a DC motor with soft start and battery backup. The 8365W-267 already has Wi Fi and limits set by button, so the motor and the backup are the real step up. If you are replacing an 8365W-267 that has several problems at once, that is the step we would look at. If yours only needs a carriage or a capacitor, keep it running.
