A garage door motor that hums without moving the door is usually stalled by a failed start capacitor or a mechanical blockage in the drive system. You are hearing the electrical current reach the motor windings, but the rotor cannot generate enough torque to overcome the physical resistance or the lack of an electrical “kick” from the capacitor.

Why is the motor humming but the door isn’t moving?

The most common culprit for a humming motor is a failed start capacitor. Think of the capacitor as a small battery that provides a massive surge of energy to get the motor spinning. Because garage door openers use AC motors that require a high starting torque, they cannot start on their own from a dead stop. When the capacitor leaks or “mushrooms” at the top, the motor receives power but lacks the phase-shift needed to turn. It sits there and vibrates at 60 hertz, which is the humming sound you hear.

If the capacitor is fine, the issue is likely a physical seizure. This could be inside the motor casing itself, such as a seized bearing, or in the drive gear assembly. In many LiftMaster and Chamberlain models, the internal white plastic drive gear can strip. While this usually results in the motor running freely without moving the door, a total jam in the gear teeth can lock the motor shaft entirely.

Another possibility is a “travel limit” error. If the motor thinks the door is already fully open or closed but the physical position of the trolley is jammed against a bolt or the motor head, the system will hum as it tries to push against an immovable object. This often happens if the “up” limit was set too far and the trolley has wedged itself against the stop bolt on the rail.

Testing the door balance and the trolley

Before assuming the motor is dead, you must determine if the problem is the opener or the door itself. Pull the red emergency release cord to disconnect the door from the motor. Try to lift the door by hand. If the door is heavy, difficult to move, or stuck in the tracks, the motor isn’t the problem—the door is.

A garage door should be balanced by its torsion springs. If you cannot lift the door easily with one hand while it is disconnected, the motor was likely humming because it was trying to lift a dead weight it wasn’t designed for. The role of the start capacitor and drive gears

The start capacitor is a cylindrical component located under the plastic cover of your motor. When they fail, they often show visible signs of distress. Look for a bulging top or oily residue leaking from the terminals. Replacing a capacitor is a common repair, but it involves working near high-voltage components that can hold a charge even when the unit is unplugged.

The drive gears are the next point of failure. Most residential openers use a gear and sprocket kit. In a chain-drive system, the motor turns a plastic worm gear, which then turns a larger plastic drive gear attached to the sprocket. If these gears become misaligned or if the lubricant has dried out—a common issue in the damp climate of the Lower Mainland—the friction becomes too great. The motor hums because it is physically unable to turn the gears. You might see white plastic “snow” or shavings inside the motor cover, which is a clear sign the gears have been grinding down.

How Richmond’s environment affects motor lifespan

A DC motor starts and stops slowly (soft start/stop), which reduces the wear on the gears and the door itself.

Furthermore, if the humming is caused by a failed logic board on an obsolete model, parts may no longer be available. Upgrading to a new unit provides better safety features, such as encrypted signals that prevent remote code grabbing and battery backup systems that allow you to get your car out during a power outage.
