The motor hums or the chain moves, but the door does not budge. That disconnect means the opener is doing its job — turning the drive — but the mechanical link to the door has failed. What the opener actually does

A garage door opener does not lift the door. It provides a nudge — about the force of a firm push — to overcome friction and get the door moving. The three most common failures

Stripped nylon drive gear

Chain and belt openers made after the mid-1990s almost always use a nylon drive gear on the motor shaft meshing with a larger nylon gear on the output shaft. It is a sacrificial part — designed to strip before the motor burns out or the chain snaps. When it goes, you hear a grinding or buzzing sound from the motor head, the chain or belt may twitch, but the trolley stays put.

LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Craftsman units from 1995 to roughly 2015 share the same gear kit (part 41A2817 or 41C4220A). Genie uses a different splined gear. The repair takes 30 to 45 minutes: remove the motor cover, pull the output shaft, press the old gear off, press the new one on, reassemble, and re-limit the travel. If the opener is over 15 years old, the circuit board often fails within a year of the gear replacement — heat and vibration take their toll.

Broken trolley carriage

The trolley (also called the carriage) rides the rail and connects to the J-arm. On chain and belt drives, it is a plastic or nylon casting with a metal sleeve for the bolt. On screw drives, it is a bronze or plastic nut that threads onto the rod. Impact — backing into the door, a wind-loaded door slamming shut, or a spring breaking under tension — cracks the casting or strips the internal threads.

A cracked trolley moves a few centimetres then stops, or it moves freely but the door does not. You can often see the crack with a flashlight. Replacement means lowering the rail, sliding off the old trolley, sliding on the new one, and reattaching the chain or belt. On a screw drive, the rod must be cleaned of old grease and the new nut timed to the travel limits.

Snapped torsion spring or cable

This is the heaviest failure and the most common in Richmond’s older neighbourhoods. A standard 16×7 double door with 200-pound springs weighs 180 to 220 pounds without counterbalance. The opener cannot lift it. The trolley will move toward the motor head, the chain will go slack, and the door will not move an inch.
