Opener Light Blinking Error Codes — What Your LiftMaster or Chamberlain Is Telling You

The light on your opener isn’t flashing for decoration. It’s a diagnostic code. LiftMaster and Chamberlain use the same logic — count the flashes, pause, count again. That sequence tells you exactly which circuit or sensor has failed. Below are the codes you’ll actually see on residential units in the field, translated from tech-speak into what you can check yourself.

One Flash — Safety Sensor Circuit Open

The most common code. The opener sees an open circuit on the photo-eye wires. Start at the sensors. Both LEDs should be solid — amber on the sender, green on the receiver. If either is off, flickering, or dim, the beam is broken or the wiring is damaged. Check the obvious first: cobwebs, a stacked bin, a bike tire crossing the path. Wipe the lenses with a dry cloth. If the LEDs look good, tug the wires gently at each sensor and at the opener terminal block. Vibration works the low-voltage strands loose over years. A single broken conductor inside the insulation will throw this code every time. Still flashing? Disconnect the sensor wires at the opener and short the two terminals with a piece of wire. If the code clears, the fault is in the wire run or the sensors themselves. If it stays, the logic board has a bad sensor input — board replacement territory.

Two Flashes — Safety Sensor Wire Shorted

Same circuit, opposite problem. The two sensor wires are touching each other or a staple has pierced the insulation and bridged them. Walk the wire run. Look for staple cuts, rodent chew, or a pinch point where the door track meets the wall. Separate the conductors at the opener terminals. If the code clears, the short is in the field wiring. If it remains with wires disconnected, the short is internal to the board.

Three Flashes — Door Control / Wall Station Shorted

The wired push-button or multi-function wall console has a shorted circuit. Disconnect the two control wires at the opener. If the three-flash code stops, the fault is in the wall station or its wiring. Moisture inside a garage-mounted button is the usual culprit. Replace the station. If the code persists with wires off, the logic board’s control input is damaged.

Four Flashes — Misaligned or Obstructed Sensors

Both sensors have power and the circuit is complete, but the beam isn’t making it across. This is an alignment issue, not a wiring issue. The green receiver LED will be off or flickering while the amber sender stays solid. Loosen the wing nuts. Adjust one sensor at a time until the green LED locks solid. Tighten. Tap the bracket with your palm — if the light flickers, the bracket is flexing. Shim it or remount to solid framing. Sunlight hitting the receiver lens at low angle can also trigger this. A simple shade — a piece of cardboard taped above the lens — fixes it.

Five Flashes — Motor Overheated or RPM Sensor Failure

The opener ran too long without a cool-down, or the RPM sensor (hall-effect sensor on the motor shaft) isn’t sending pulses. Let the unit sit 20 minutes. Try again. If it runs normally, you hit the thermal limit — usually from repeated cycles in a short window or a heavy door with worn springs. If the code returns immediately, unplug the opener. Remove the cover. Check the small 3-wire connector on the motor end cap. Reseat it. Spin the motor shaft by hand — it should turn freely. Binding means a gear assembly problem or a seized bearing. RPM sensor failure is common on units over 10 years. The sensor itself is replaceable, but on older chassis the labor often makes a full opener swap the smarter money.

Six Flashes — Motor Circuit Failure / Logic Board Fault

The board isn’t seeing the motor draw it expects. Could be a bad triac, a blown trace, or a failed motor winding. Unplug. Check the motor wires at the board for burn marks or loose pins. If the motor hums but doesn’t turn, and the capacitor tests good, the motor is likely done. If the motor doesn’t make a sound, the board’s output stage is cooked. Board replacement is possible, but on a 15-year unit you’re buying time, not reliability.

Seven Flashes — Limit Switch / Encoder Error

The opener can’t determine door position. The encoder disk on the motor shaft is dirty, damaged, or the sensor eyes are blocked. Open the cover. Blow out dust with compressed air. Look at the slotted disk — cracks or missing teeth mean the disk needs replacement. On chain-drive units, a loose chain can jump the sprocket and desynchronize the limits. Re-tension the chain to 1/2 inch sag at mid-span, then reprogram limits.

Eight Flashes — Brownout / Low Voltage Detection

Line voltage dropped below ~100 VAC during operation. Check the outlet with a multimeter under load. If the circuit shares a compressor, freezer, or space heater, move the opener to a purpose-built circuit. Extension cords and undersized wiring (14 AWG on a 50-foot run) will cause this. Hardwire or use a 12 AWG cord rated for the opener’s amperage.

Nine Flashes — Accessory / Expansion Board Fault

An add-on module — battery backup, MyQ gateway, lock interface — has a communication error. Unplug all accessories. Power cycle the opener. If the code clears, reconnect one at a time until it returns. That module or its cable is the problem. Battery backup units are the frequent offender. The backup’s own LED will show its status — usually a dead SLA battery after 3–4 years.

Ten Flashes — Factory Reset / Memory Corruption

Non-volatile memory checksum failed. The board forgot its limits, force settings, and paired remotes. Reprogram everything: limits, force, remotes, keypad, vehicle transmitters. If the code returns after a power cycle, the EEPROM on the board is failing. Replace the board.

When the Table Isn’t Enough

Codes assume one clean fault. Real doors give you two at once — a frayed sensor wire and a weak spring making the door heavy enough to trigger force reversal. The light blinks the first fault it sees. Fix that, and the next code appears. Also: Genie, Craftsman, Marantec, and Linear use different blink patterns. The logic is similar — count, pause, count — but the numbers mean different things. If you have a non-LiftMaster/Chamberlain unit, check the manual for that brand.

What You Can Do Right Now

1. Count the flashes exactly. Write the sequence down. 2. Check the sensor LEDs — they’re the fastest diagnostic tool you have. 3. Unplug the opener for 30 seconds. Plug it back. Some transient codes clear on power cycle. 4. If the code points to wiring, and you’re not comfortable tracing low-voltage runs in insulation, stop. That’s a service call.

When to Call

Board-level faults (six, ten flashes), motor winding failures (five flashes that don’t clear), and encoder disk damage (seven flashes with visible cracks) are not DIER jobs — DIER: “do it, expect replacement.” The parts cost approaches a new opener, and the labor on a 12-foot ladder with the door disconnected is where people get hurt. If the door is off the tracks, the springs are broken, or the cables are slack, the opener code is the least of your problems. Fix the mechanical side first.
