Most keypad problems are not keypad problems. They are memory problems — the opener forgot the code, or the keypad never synced in the first place. This guide walks through the actual programming sequences for the brands on most Metro Vancouver homes, plus the failure points that send people in circles.
Find the learn button first
Every opener has a learn button on the motor head. It is usually behind the light lens cover, sometimes on the back panel, rarely on the side. The button colour tells you the protocol:
- Yellow — Security+ 2.0 (LiftMaster/Chamberlain, 2011 and newer)
- Purple — Security+ (LiftMaster/Chamberlain, 2005–2010)
- Orange/Red — Security+ rolling code (older LiftMaster/Chamberlain)
- Green — Billion code (pre-2005 LiftMaster/Chamberlain)
- Black or unmarked — Genie Intellicode, Linear, Stanley, and others
If you cannot see a colour, look at the LED next to the button. Yellow LED means yellow button. Purple LED means purple button. The LED colour is the reliable signal; the plastic button cap fades.
LiftMaster and Chamberlain (yellow button, 2011+)
These two brands share the same board. The keypad is usually a LiftMaster 877MAX or Chamberlain KLIK2U.
1. Press and release the yellow learn button on the opener. The LED beside it lights steady. 2. Within 30 seconds, enter your new four-digit PIN on the keypad. 3. Press and hold the Enter key on the keypad. Hold it until the opener lights flash or you hear two clicks — about three seconds. 4. Release Enter. Test the code.
If the keypad has a Program button instead of Enter, hold Program until the keypad LED blinks, enter the PIN, then press Program once more. Then go to the opener and press the learn button once.
Common failure: entering the PIN too slowly. The 30-second window starts the moment you press the learn button. Have the code ready before you climb the ladder.
LiftMaster and Chamberlain (purple button, 2005–2010)
Same keypads, different timing.
1. Press and release the purple learn button. LED lights steady. 2. Within 30 seconds, enter the PIN on the keypad. 3. Press and hold Enter until the opener lights flash (two flashes) or the motor head clicks twice. 4. Release. Test.
These boards are picky about keypad battery voltage. A CR2032 that reads 2.9 V under no load will still fail the transmit burst. Swap the battery first if the keypad LED dims while you hold Enter.
Genie Intellicode (black button, most models)
Genie keypads (GK-BX, GWKIC, ACSDG) use a double-press learn sequence.
1. Press and release the learn button on the power head. The round LED blinks once per second. 2. Within 30 seconds, press 3-5-7 on the keypad, then Program (or Up/Down on some models). The keypad LED should blink. 3. Enter your new PIN (3–8 digits). 4. Press Program again. The keypad LED goes solid. 5. Press the learn button on the opener a second time. The opener LED goes solid. 6. Enter the PIN on the keypad and press Program (or Up/Down) one more time. 7. Test.
Genie keypads lose sync after a power outage more often than other brands. The opener retains the code, but the keypad forgets its transmitter ID. Reprogramming from step 1 fixes it.
Linear / Multi-Code / Stanley (DIP switch era)
If the opener has a row of 9 or 10 tiny switches inside the motor head or the remote, it is fixed-code. The keypad must match those switches exactly.
1. Open the keypad battery cover. You will find a matching row of switches. 2. Set each keypad switch to match the opener — up/on/closed = 1, down/off/open = 0. 3. Close the cover. Enter a PIN (usually 3–4 digits) and press Start or Enter. 4. Test.
These systems have no rolling code. Anyone with a compatible remote can clone the code in seconds. If the house still runs one of these, plan to replace the opener. It is not a keypad issue; it is a security issue.
Marantec (Digital 302, 304, 306, 307, 308)
Marantec uses a single-button learn on the opener and a three-button sequence on the keypad (usually M3-2312 or M3-2313).
1. Press and hold the P button on the opener until the display shows PR or the LED blinks rapidly. 2. On the keypad, press 1-2-3 in sequence, then Enter. 3. Enter your new PIN. 4. Press Enter again. The opener display should show OK or the LED goes steady. 5. Test.
Marantec keypads are sensitive to RF noise from LED shop lights on the same circuit. If programming fails repeatedly, unplug the lights and try again.
Why the keypad still will not work
You followed the steps. The opener lights flashed. The keypad beeped. The door does not move.
Battery contact corrosion. The CR2032 holder in most wireless keypads is a stamped tin tab. A white crust on the positive contact adds enough resistance to kill the transmit burst. Scrape it clean with a pocket knife blade or replace the keypad.
Antenna wire. The opener’s receive antenna is a single wire hanging from the motor head. If it got pushed up into the insulation or cut during insulation work, range drops to inches. Pull it down straight. Do not coil it.
Photo-eye alignment. The door will not close from the keypad if the safety beams are misaligned — but it will open. If open works and close does not, check the eyes before you reprogram anything.
Wrong keypad for the opener. A Chamberlain KLIK2U will not learn to a Genie Intellicode opener. A Genie GK-BX will not learn to a Security+ 2.0 board. The packaging lists compatible models. Read it.
Keypad mounted too far. Wireless keypads are rated for 50–100 feet line of sight. A stucco wall with wire lath cuts that to 15 feet. A metal siding wall kills it entirely. If the keypad works when you stand next to the opener but not from the driveway, the mounting location is the problem.
When to stop and call
- The learn button does not light or blink at all — board failure.
- The keypad LED never comes on with a fresh battery — keypad failure.
- You have an opener older than 1993 with no learn button and no DIP switches — it is a fixed-code receiver that requires a matching remote, not a universal keypad.
- The door reverses, binds, or makes a grinding noise when it finally moves — the keypad worked; the door has a mechanical problem.
Reprogramming a keypad takes five minutes when the hardware is healthy. If you have spent twenty minutes on the ladder and the sequence still will not stick, something else is wrong. That is the point to put the tools down.
