Your garage door runs quiet through October. Then the first cold snap hits and it sounds like a different machine — grinding, squeaking, popping. And you know the noise is connected to the temperature, because when it warms up, the door goes quiet again.
This is not in your head. A garage door that acts up only in the cold has a specific set of possible causes, and most of them are fixable. The trick is knowing which one you are dealing with before you start spraying things with lubricant.
What changes when it gets cold
The hardware on a garage door is a system of moving metal parts. Steel rollers ride in steel tracks. Hinges pivot on steel pins. The torsion spring twists and unwinds. Grease and lubricant are what keep those metal-on-metal interfaces from making noise.
When the temperature drops, grease thickens. It stiffens up, gets tacky, and stops doing its job. The difference between 10°C and -5°C is enough to turn a well-lubricated hinge into a dry one. How to inspect a cold noisy garage door yourself
Before you call anyone, there are a few things you can look at. None of them require special tools.

Most garage door noise problems get worse because people use the wrong lubricant. WD-40 is not a lubricant for garage doors. It is a solvent and water displacer. It will wash out existing grease and leave the parts dry, which makes the noise worse within a week.
Use a silicone-based spray lubricant for the rollers and hinges. Use a lithium-based grease for the track. But here is the important part: do not grease the track surface itself. The track should be clean and dry. Grease on the track surface attracts dust and grit, which turns into a grinding paste. The only parts of the track that need lubrication are the roller bearings and the hinges.
Spray each roller bearing — the point where the roller stem goes into the bracket — with silicone lubricant. Open and close the door a few times to work it in. Then spray each hinge pin. That is it.

There is a point where lubrication will not help. If you have lubricated everything properly and the noise is still there, or if the noise has changed from a squeak to a grind, you have a mechanical problem that needs hands-on diagnosis.
The most common hidden cause of cold-weather noise is a torsion spring that has lost its factory lubrication. The spring coils rub against each other as the spring winds and unwinds. When the factory coating dries out — usually after five to seven years in Richmond’s climate — the spring starts to make a grinding sound in cold weather. A technician can apply a spring-specific lubricant, but if the spring is near the end of its cycle life, the real answer is replacement.
