Monitored vs. Non-Monitored: The Distinction That Matters

Since the 2017 UL 325 update, a commercial operator on a monitored circuit will not run in momentary-contact mode without a working, monitored primary entrapment protection device. Monitored devices (PHOTO070, LIGHTCURTAIN001/002, SENSEDGE044UM) communicate continuously with the operator’s BOARD 070M. If the device fails or drifts out of alignment, the board detects it and refuses to close the door on momentary contact — that is correct safety behaviour, not a malfunction.

Non-monitored devices (PHOTO075, PHOTO077, SENSEDGE044U) are ancillary supplements. They can back up a monitored primary or serve on constant-pressure-to-close doors, but they never satisfy the primary requirement on a monitored circuit.

Choosing the Right Device for the Opening

  • Single photo eye (PHOTO070) — guards one beam height; standard for most vehicle doors.
  • Light curtain (LIGHTCURTAIN001 or 002) — throws a dense barrier 3 ft or 6 ft up the opening. Specified where pedestrians and forklifts mix, or where loads overhang below a single beam’s line.
  • Sensing edge (SENSEDGE044U or 044UM) — rides the door’s bottom edge and reacts to touch. The right answer when the approach can’t be beam-protected, and the usual retrofit path on older doors.

Many specifying engineers combine an edge with eyes; the devices are designed to co-exist as primary plus ancillary.

What Fails in the Field & How We Repair It

  • Alignment, wiring damage, and grime cause most photo eye calls. A forklift-clipped bracket or a fogged lens interrupts the beam as effectively as a person standing in it. On monitored circuits the symptom is always the same: the door refuses to close on momentary contact.
  • Sensing edges fail by conductor fatigue at the wire outlet and by physical damage along the rubber profile. Monitored edges add the INTERFACE002 module as one more link to test.
  • Our service process: we verify board-level communication on BOARD 070M, re-align or replace brackets, swap damaged cable runs, and replace worn edge conductors or interface modules. We carry the Manaras spec sheets and accessory catalogue on every truck.

Parts & Accessories

We stock replacement brackets, reflectors, cables, and the INTERFACE002 module for monitored edges. Pricing is quoted per project — call for a quote on the exact kit your door needs.
