A garage door comes off its track for one of a few specific reasons. It is not random, and it is not wear and tear you could have prevented by lubricating more often.
The door sits in a pair of vertical tracks that curve into horizontal tracks along the ceiling. The rollers on each side of the door ride inside those tracks. When one roller leaves the track — or when the track itself bends — the door binds, tilts, and usually stops moving. If you try to force it, you can bend the track further or snap a cable.
What physically happens when a door goes off track
The weight of the door is held by the cables and springs, but its alignment is held by the tracks. A sectional door has rollers at each panel joint. Four, six, or eight rollers per side, depending on door height. Every roller must stay inside its track channel for the door to move straight.
When a door goes off track, one of three things happened:
- A roller popped out of the track channel. The roller head pulled sideways past the track lip. This usually happens near the bottom or the top curve.
- The track itself bent or shifted. A flanged track bolted to the wall can get knocked out of vertical. Even a quarter-inch bow will cause the roller to jam.
- The cable came off the drum. The lifting cable runs from the bottom bracket up to a grooved drum at the top of the track. If the cable slips off the drum or snaps, one side of the door drops. The whole door cocks sideways, and the rollers on the dropped side leave the track.
The most common scenario is a combination: a cable failure drops one side, the door twists, and the rollers on the low side walk out of the track as you try to operate it.
How to tell what caused it
You need to look before you do anything else. Disconnect the opener using the red emergency release cord first. Then look at the door from inside, standing far enough back to see both sides at once.
The door is tilted — one side lower than the other. That is a cable or spring problem, not a track problem. The cable on the low side has likely come off its drum or broken. The door is now hanging unevenly, and the low side’s rollers have probably left the track. Do not touch the cables or springs. Call a technician.
The door is level but stuck, and one roller is visible outside the track. A single roller popped out. This can happen from a hard impact — backing a car into the door, a kid on a bike, a garbage bin left in the way. It can also happen from a worn roller bearing that let the roller tilt sideways inside the track. If the door is level and the track is straight, a technician can put the roller back in and replace the worn roller. That is a straightforward fix.
The door binds in one spot and the track looks bent. Look at the track flanges. A dent or a bow in the vertical section will pinch the roller. This happens from impact, or from years of the door scraping against the same spot because the track was never perfectly plumb. A bowed track can be straightened or replaced. If the track is only dented in one spot, straightening it with a hammer and a block of wood is sometimes possible, but the track has to come off the wall to do it right.
The door is off track at the top curve. The horizontal track section where the door curves from vertical to overhead is the most common place for a roller to jump. That curve is where the door changes direction under spring tension. If the spring tension is off — too much or too little — the door can bounce at the curve and pop a roller. This is more common in Metro Vancouver’s wet winters, when cold grease stiffens and the door jerks through the curve instead of gliding.
What to inspect before calling a technician
You can safely check a few things without putting your hands near springs or cables.
- Look at the tracks. Are they bolted tight to the wall brackets? A loose bracket will let the track shift. Tighten the lag bolts with a socket wrench if they are loose. Do not overtighten — you can strip the hole in the wood framing.
- Look at the rollers. Spin each roller by hand. If a roller is wobbly, the bearing is worn. Worn rollers tilt inside the track and are more likely to pop out. Replace them. Nylon rollers with steel bearings are standard now and last longer than the old all-steel ones.
- Look at the track gap. The track should be the same distance from the door on both sides, top to bottom. If the gap changes, the track is bent or the brackets have shifted.
- Look at the bottom brackets. These are the steel brackets at the bottom corners of the bottom panel, where the cable attaches. If a bottom bracket is bent, the cable will not sit straight on the drum. A bent bottom bracket usually means the door was forced while it was already binding.
If you see a broken cable, a loose cable on the drum, or a spring that looks wrong — gaps in the coil, rust, a snapped end — stop looking and call a technician. Those parts are under live tension.
The point where it stops being a DIY job
There is no safe way to put a garage door back on track if the cables have come off the drums. The cables are under the full weight of the door. To get them back on the drum, you have to relieve that tension. That means either winding the springs down or clamping the door in a specific position. Both require the tools and the experience to handle torsion springs.
A torsion spring under load stores enough energy to break bones. It does not give warning. It does not groan before it lets go. It just spins.
If the door is off track but the cables are still on the drums and the door is level, a technician can usually lever the roller back into the track in about twenty minutes. If the cables are off, the door has to be cabled up, the springs reset, and the track alignment checked. That is a longer job.
How a pro realigns a garage door track
First, they assess what failed. They look at the cables, the springs, the tracks, and the rollers. They will operate the door manually — if it is safe to do so — to see where it binds.
If the track is bent, they loosen the track brackets, straighten or replace the track section, and re-plumb it. They check that the track is exactly vertical and that the gap between the track and the door is even on both sides.
If a cable came off, they replace it. Cables should always be replaced in pairs. The old cable on the other side has the same number of cycles on it. It will fail soon.
If the spring tension was wrong and caused the door to bounce at the curve, they adjust the spring tension. They also check the spring for signs of fatigue — rust pitting, gaps in the coil, loss of paint — and recommend replacement if it is near the end of its life.
They test the door through a full open-and-close cycle. They check the balance: the door should stay put at waist height when disconnected from the opener. If it drops or rises, the spring tension is still off.
They also check the opener’s force settings. A door that goes off track can damage the opener. The force limits may need recalibration so the opener stops before it bends the track again.
Preventing a garage door from jumping the track
Most off-track incidents are caused by something that happened before the door left the track.
- Worn rollers. Replace them when they start wobbling. Every 5-7 years for nylon rollers in a residential door, sooner in coastal salt air. Richmond and the rest of Metro Vancouver’s climate — wet winters, salt air from the Fraser River and the Strait of Georgia — corrodes roller bearings faster than inland cities.
- Loose track brackets. Check them once a year. Tighten as needed.
- Impact damage. If someone hits the door, have it inspected even if it still opens. A bent track that is not bad enough to stop the door will still cause uneven wear on the rollers and cables.
- Spring failure. A broken spring drops the door. If the spring breaks while the door is opening, the door falls and the cables often come off the drums. Springs should be replaced before they break. The rule of thumb is 10,000 to 15,000 cycles. If you open and close your door four times a day, that is about seven to ten years.
If you are in a neighbourhood with older homes — New Westminster’s Queens Park, with its pre-1941 heritage houses, or Coquitlam’s Maillardville, where original 1910s-40s openings often have non-standard dimensions — the tracks and hardware may not match modern standard sizes. That makes alignment more critical. A track that is slightly off on a standard door might run for years. On a custom-sized door with no room for adjustment, it binds immediately.
A door that goes off track once is likely to do it again unless you fix what caused it. Track straightening alone is not enough if the rollers are worn or the spring tension is wrong.
