The auto-reverse system is the only thing stopping a 300-pound door from closing on a child or dog. Most homeowners have never tested it. The test takes thirty seconds and requires a 2×4 and a roll of paper towels. If the door fails either test, disconnect the opener and call a technician — do not keep using it.
How the two safety systems actually work
Every residential opener made after 1993 has two independent reversal mechanisms. The mechanical system feels resistance. When the bottom edge hits an object — a shin, a paw, a bicycle — the opener senses the extra load and reverses. The photo-eye system uses an invisible infrared beam across the opening, mounted no higher than six inches off the floor. Break the beam while the door is moving down and it must reverse immediately.
They are backup for each other. The mechanical system catches things the beam misses — a child lying flat under the beam height, a pet that slips between the sensors. The photo-eyes catch things the mechanical system misses — a broom handle held horizontally, a car bumper that triggers reversal before contact. Both must work. One working is not enough.
The 2×4 test (mechanical reverse)
Close the door. Place a flat 2×4 on the floor, centered under the door, wide side down. Hit the wall button. The door must strike the wood and reverse within two seconds. If it crushes the wood, hesitates, or reverses only after bending the board, the force setting is too high or the opener logic board is failing. Adjusting the force screws on the motor unit is not a fix — it masks the symptom. The springs may be unbalanced, the rollers binding, or the gear set stripped. Have a technician diagnose the root cause.
The paper-towel test (photo-eye alignment)
Close the door. Tear off a sheet of paper towel. Hold it so it breaks the beam between the two sensors while the door is descending. The door must reverse the instant the beam breaks. If it keeps moving, the eyes are misaligned, dirty, or one has failed. Wipe the lenses with a dry microfiber cloth. Check that both LEDs are lit solid — usually green on the sender, amber or green on the receiver. If one is blinking or off, loosen the wing nut, pivot the bracket until the light is solid, retighten, and retest. If they will not hold alignment, the bracket is bent or the wiring is damaged. Replace the pair; they are sold as a set and cost less than a service call.
Mounting height matters more than most people realize
Code requires photo-eyes no higher than six inches above the floor. Six inches is the maximum, not a suggestion. Mount them at twelve inches and a crawling toddler or a dachshund passes under the beam untouched. If your sensors are higher, remount them. It takes two screws per side and a level. Do not use zip ties, duct tape, or wire to “aim” them — vibration from the door will shift them within a week.
Household rules that prevent the call we all dread
- The wall button goes at least five feet above the floor. If yours is lower, move it. Children treat low buttons like light switches.
- Remotes stay in the car or on a high hook. Not in the cupholder where a toddler reaches them. Not on the kitchen counter.
- No one crosses the threshold while the door is moving. Not “just this once.” Not “I’ll be quick.” The door wins every tie.
- Pets do not wait under the door. Train them to sit at a marked line three feet back. Reinforce it with treats. It works better than yelling.
- The emergency release cord (red handle) is not a toy. Show older kids what it does and why they never pull it unless an adult says so. A door with the opener disconnected can crash down if the springs are weak or broken.
What worn parts look like before they fail
Frayed lift cables. The individual wires snap one by one until the cable parts. You will see broken strands poking out near the bottom bracket or the drum. Replace both cables at once — the other side is the same age.
Cracked nylon rollers. They shatter under load and the door jumps the track. Steel rollers with sealed bearings last ten times longer and cost pennies more.
Loose bottom brackets. The bolts back out from vibration. The bracket tilts, the cable slips, the door binds. Check the lag bolts twice a year with a 7/16 socket.
Springs that are stretched, gapped, or rusty. A torsion spring stores enough energy to throw the door through the roof. Do not touch them. Do not spray them with WD-40. Call a technician.
When to stop testing and start calling
The door reverses on the 2×4 but not the paper towel — or vice versa. The photo-eyes will not hold alignment after you clean and straighten them. The opener hums but the door does not move, or moves six inches and stops. You see daylight between coils of a torsion spring. The door feels heavy when you lift it manually (pull the red handle first).
Any of these means the system is not protecting the people and animals you live with. Disconnect the opener. Operate the door manually only if it balances cleanly. Otherwise leave it closed and locked.
