Garage Door Opens Partially Then Stops in Richmond BC

Your garage door starts to open, moves a few inches or a foot, and then stops. It might reverse back down, or it might just sit there with the opener humming. This is one of the most common calls in Richmond, and the cause is usually simpler than you think.

The door is telling you that something is wrong. The opener’s safety logic is doing exactly what it should: stopping the door before it causes damage or injures someone. The trick is figuring out which thing is triggering it.

What the opener is actually sensing

Your garage door opener has two built-in limits. It knows where “closed” is and where “open” is. When you press the button, the opener sends power to the motor, the motor turns the screw or belt or chain, and the door starts moving. The opener measures how much resistance the door is giving it.

If the door gets harder to lift than the opener expects — or easier — the opener assumes something is blocking it and stops. This is called the force-sensing circuit. On most openers made after 1993, this circuit is mandatory by law. It is the same system that makes the door reverse if a child is under it.

So when your door opens a few inches and stops, the question is: what changed the force?

The four things that cause this

There are four common reasons a door opens partially and stops. They are not hard to tell apart if you know what to look for.

1. Sticky or binding tracks

The tracks guide the rollers. If a track is bent, dented, or misaligned, the roller hits the tight spot and the door binds. The opener pulls harder, hits the force limit, and stops.

What to look for: Open the door manually using the emergency release cord. Pull the red handle. Then lift the door by hand. If it gets hard to lift at the same point where the opener stops, you have a track problem. Look at the track at that height. You are looking for a dent, a gap between the track and the wall, or a roller that has popped out.

In Richmond’s older neighbourhoods, like the single-family homes built in the 1960s and 70s, track issues are often the result of years of normal settling. The house shifts, the track stays where it was bolted, and the alignment goes.

2. A broken or fraying cable

The cables run from the bottom bracket on each side of the door, up through the drums on the torsion shaft, and back down. They are under constant tension. When a cable starts to fray, one or more strands break. The cable then catches on the drum or the cable drum flange, and the door lifts unevenly.

What to look for: Stand inside the garage and watch the door open. If one side lifts higher than the other before it stops, you have a cable problem. You might also see slack in one cable when the door is fully closed.

A cable that has snapped completely will usually leave the door stuck at an angle, one side on the floor and the other side up. That is a different symptom. A partially frayed cable causes the intermittent stop-and-go.

3. Misaligned or dirty safety sensors

The photo-eye sensors sit on each side of the door, about six inches off the floor. They shoot an invisible beam across the opening. If the beam is broken, the opener will not close the door. But some openers also use the sensors as part of the opening logic. If the sensors are dirty, misaligned, or getting intermittent sun glare, the opener can lose its mind and stop partway up.

What to look for: Check if both sensor lights are on and steady. One light should be solid green or solid red, depending on the brand. The other should be solid too. If one is blinking or off, the sensors are not aligned. Wipe the lenses with a dry cloth. Make sure nothing is blocking them — a storage box, a bike tire, a spider web.

In Richmond’s wet winters, condensation builds up inside the sensor housings. That can cause intermittent faults that come and go with the weather.

4. Worn gears in the opener

The opener motor turns a set of plastic or nylon gears. These gears wear down over time. When they strip, the motor runs but the drive does not engage properly. The opener might make a humming or grinding noise, and the door moves a few inches before the opener gives up.

What to look for: This is the one where the opener sounds different. A healthy opener is relatively quiet. A worn-gear opener has a rattling, grinding, or buzzing sound. If you disconnect the door with the red cord and run the opener by itself, it should move freely. If it still makes noise or stops, the opener unit itself is the problem.

Safe checks before calling a technician

Before you call anyone, do three things. They take five minutes and they rule out the most common causes.

First, pull the red emergency release cord. Lift the door manually. Does it move smoothly all the way up? If yes, the door itself is fine and the problem is in the opener. If it binds or gets heavy, the door hardware needs attention.

Second, check the tracks. Run your hand along the inside of each track. You are not trying to clean them — you are feeling for dents, burrs, or obstructions. Do this with the door open so you can see the full length of the track.

Third, clean the sensor lenses. A dry microfiber cloth is best. Check that both sensor lights are on and steady.

If none of these fix it, the problem is likely inside the opener or in the spring system.

Signs you need a professional repair

The point where you stop is when the repair involves torsion springs or the opener’s internal circuit board.

Torsion springs are under extreme tension. A standard residential torsion spring stores enough energy to break an arm or take off fingers. Do not touch them. Do not oil them. Do not try to adjust them. If you suspect the spring is the issue — because the door is heavy to lift manually or because you hear a metallic twang — call a technician.

The same goes for the opener’s logic board. If the force settings are wrong, adjusting them requires a technician who knows the specific opener model and can set the force limits correctly. Setting them too high is dangerous. The door will not reverse when it hits something.

How a technician fixes partial opening

It takes twenty minutes and it catches the small problems before they become the “opens a few inches and stops” problem.
