Up & Down Garage Doors stocks, installs and services the Manaras Opera-BH (OBH) jackshaft operator throughout Metro Vancouver from our Richmond shop. This heavy-duty unit is built for standard, high-lift and vertical-lift sectional doors, rolling doors and grilles where manual operation is a regular requirement, not just a backup plan.

Where the OBH Makes Sense
The Opera-BH is specified for heavy-duty sites where staff hand-chain the door often — fire halls, municipal works yards, service buildings and similar facilities. Its Hoist-a-matic mechanism removes the engagement step required on standard hoists: grab the chain and go. An electrical interlock cuts motor power the instant the hoist or egress release is engaged, so manual and powered operation never conflict.
Common Failure Points & How We Repair Them
- V-belt tension: The primary reduction belt stretches over time. We re-tension or replace it during scheduled maintenance or emergency calls.
- Friction clutch: Wear or contamination changes the slip point. We clean, adjust or rebuild the clutch on the input shaft to restore consistent torque limiting.
- Mechanical brake: Pad wear or spring fatigue leads to drift or coasting. We replace linings and verify holding torque.
- Hoist-a-matic interlock switch: This is the diagnostic trap. After a power outage where someone hand-chained the door, a stuck or failed interlock leaves the operator electrically dead — mimicking a board or power fault. We check the interlock first, not last, saving hours of misdiagnosis.
Choosing Between Jackshaft Models
If you are unsure which unit is on your door, read the data plate on the operator housing — note the model code, voltage, phase and approximate daily cycles. Those three facts determine most of what we bring to a service call. The OBH sits alongside the OSH, OMH and heavy-duty OPH/OHJ models in the Manaras range; we can help confirm the right fit for your application and duty cycle.
Parts, Accessories & Safety Notes
The OBH pairs with the full Manaras accessory lineup: photo eyes, light curtains, sensing edges, radio controls, control stations and traffic lights. On a UL 325 monitored circuit, a failed or misaligned safety device will prevent the door from closing — this is correct behaviour, not a malfunction. A door that suddenly refuses to close with no other symptom is very often a photo eye or sensing edge issue.
