What gauge and profile are standard?

Trade-standard horizontal struts are roll-formed from 18-gauge (1.21 mm) or 16-gauge (1.52 mm) galvanized steel, typically 3” deep C-channel with 1” return flanges. Lengths match section width: 192” for 16’ doors, 216” for 18’ doors. Struts are spaced one per section on doors over 14’ wide; two per section (upper and lower third) on 18’ doors with 24-gauge skins.

How are they fastened?

Each strut attaches with twelve to sixteen 1/4”-20 × 5/8” self-drilling tek screws through the section’s interior face into the strut’s flange. Torque is 35–45 in-lb to avoid stripping the thin skin. End caps use 5/16” grade-5 carriage bolts through the end stiles.

When are U-bars required?
