How Do I Know If My Garage Door Opener Is Dying?

The opener runs but the door doesn’t move. Or it moves six inches and quits. Maybe the remote works from the driveway but not the street, or the motor hums and nothing happens. These aren’t separate problems — they’re the same opener telling you it’s done. Most openers last 10 to 15 years. The ones that die early usually take the door’s springs or cables with them.

What the opener actually does

The opener doesn’t lift the door. The springs do that. The opener provides a nudge — about the force of a firm shove — to overcome friction and get the door moving. A trolley rides a rail, pushed by a chain, belt, or screw drive. The motor only sees load when something binds: dry rollers, a bent track, a broken spring. When the opener strains, it’s usually the door’s fault. When the opener fails on its own, it’s the logic board, the drive gear, or the motor windings.

Chain-drive openers rattle. Belt-drive openers run quiet. Screw-drive openers sit in between. All three use a plastic drive gear inside the motor housing that strips first — by design. It’s the sacrificial part. When it goes, the motor spins and the trolley stays put. You’ll hear a grinding whine. That’s the gear teeth rounding off.

Sounds that mean trouble

A healthy opener makes a consistent sound every cycle. Changes in pitch, rhythm, or volume mean something is wearing unevenly.

Grinding or growling on startup The drive gear is stripped or the motor bearings are shot. The motor spins up, the gear catches intermittently, and the trolley lurches. If you catch it early, the gear kit costs $25 and takes 20 minutes. If you run it until the motor overheats, you’re buying a whole unit.

Clicking from the motor head with no movement The logic board is trying to engage the relay but the motor isn’t drawing current. Could be a bad capacitor, a fried board, or a seized motor. Test by pulling the emergency release and moving the door by hand. If the door moves freely, the opener is the problem.

Rhythmic thumping or clunking Chain or belt skipping on the sprocket. Tension’s off, or the sprocket teeth are worn. Belt drives stretch over time. Chain drives stretch and rust. Either way, the trolley jumps a tooth each cycle and the door travels unevenly.

High-pitched whine that wasn’t there last month Motor bearings. They’re sealed. When the grease fails, the whine rises with RPM. The motor will run hot and trip the thermal overload — the opener works for one cycle, then sits dead for 20 minutes while it cools.

Movements that mean trouble

Door reverses before hitting the floor Photo-eyes are the first suspect. Clean them. Align them. If the door still reverses, the opener’s force limit is set too sensitive or the door is binding. Test: pull the release, run the door by hand. If it binds in the same spot, fix the door. If it runs free, the opener’s logic board is misreading resistance.

Door opens partway and stops The up-limit switch is drifting, or the trolley is hitting the stop bolt early. On chain drives, a stretched chain changes the trolley position enough to trigger the limit prematurely. Adjust the limits. If they won’t hold, the limit switch assembly is worn.

Remote works close but not from the car Antenna wire on the motor head is broken or corroded. Or the remote battery is low. Or a neighbour’s new LED shop lights are drowning the 315/390 MHz band. Try a second remote. If both fail at distance, the receiver on the logic board is degrading.

Wall button works, remotes don’t The logic board’s radio receiver has failed. The wired wall control bypasses it. This is a board replacement — $80 to $140 in parts — but on a 12-year-old opener, the motor and gear are next.

Opener runs, trolley doesn’t move Stripped drive gear. Pull the cover. You’ll see plastic dust. The gear kit includes the gear, a new sprocket, and usually a new limit shaft. Replace all three. Don’t reuse the old sprocket — the wear pattern matches the old gear.

Signs your garage door opener is failing

  1. Pull the red handle. Move the door by hand. It should lift with one hand and stay at waist height. If it’s heavy, crashes down, or flies up, the springs are the problem — not the opener. Stop. Call a spring tech.
  2. Check the photo-eyes. Both LEDs solid. No flicker when you tap the brackets. Wipe the lenses with a dry cloth.
  3. Inspect the chain or belt. Sag should be about 1/2 inch at mid-rail for chain, 1/4 inch for belt. More than that and it’s skipping.
  4. Look at the drive gear. Remove the motor cover (usually two screws). Shine a light. Rounded teeth or plastic dust = replace the gear kit.
  5. Test the force limits. With the door closed, place a 2×4 flat on the floor under the center. Close the door. It must reverse on contact. If it crushes the wood, the down-force is set too high — a safety hazard.
  6. Check the antenna. Wire hanging straight down from the motor head, not coiled, not cut.

Tools: 7/16″ socket, Phillips screwdriver, step ladder, 2×4. Ten minutes.

When to call a technician for opener issues

Torsion springs. The opener cannot lift a door with a broken spring. If you force it, the top section buckles, the cables jump the drums, and the door jams crooked in the tracks. A 16-foot double door with a broken spring weighs 250+ pounds. The opener’s plastic gear will strip in one cycle. If the spring is broken, you need a spring tech. Not an opener tech. The opener is fine.

Live cables. A frayed cable under tension stores enough energy to take fingers off. If the cable is unraveling at the drum or the bottom bracket, don’t touch the door. Don’t pull the release. Call emergency repair.

Logic board replacement on a 15-year-old unit. The board is available. The motor windings have 15 years of heat cycles. The gear has 15 years of wear. The capacitor is dry. You’ll spend $150 in parts and four hours, and the motor fails in three months. Put the money toward a new opener.

Safety reversal systems pre-1993. If the opener has no photo-eyes — only a mechanical contact reverse — it doesn’t meet current code. You cannot add eyes to most pre-1993 boards. Replace the opener.

What a garage door opener inspection includes

First, the balance test. Door disconnected, lifted by hand. If it fails, the springs are adjusted or replaced before the opener is touched. An unbalanced door kills openers.

Second, the hardware audit. Rollers, hinges, cables, drums, track alignment, bearing plates. Dry rollers add 15 pounds of drag. A bent track adds 30. The opener feels every ounce.

Third, the opener diagnosis. Gear inspection. Limit switch test. Force limit calibration. Receiver range test. Capacitance check on the motor start capacitor. Board voltage checks.

Labour complexity. Standard install: two hours. Low ceiling, angled ceiling, solid concrete header, or replacing a shaft-drive system with a trolley unit — adds time.

How to stop the next one from dying early

Lubricate the door, not the opener. White lithium grease on rollers, hinges, springs, and bearing plates every six months. Silicone spray on the chain or belt rail. No WD-40 — it strips grease and attracts grit.

Test balance twice a year. Pull the release. Lift to waist height. Let go. It should stay. If it drifts down or flies up, the springs need adjustment. An unbalanced door doubles the opener’s workload.

Keep the photo-eyes clean. Spider webs, leaf dust, cobwebs — they all look like an obstruction to the beam. Wipe them monthly.

Don’t hang things from the opener rail. Bike hooks, storage racks, extension cords. The rail flexes, the trolley binds, the gear strips.

Replace the remote batteries annually. Weak batteries make the transmitter draw more current, which overheats the receiver circuit on the board over time.

Address binding immediately. A door that catches once will catch every time. The opener doesn’t know the difference between a stuck roller and a person under the door — it just knows resistance. The force limits get triggered, the board logs errors, and the thermal overload cycles shorten motor life.

An opener dies from the door more often than from itself. Maintain the door and the opener outlives the warranty. Ignore the door and you’ll replace the opener every 7 to 8 years.
