The remote clicks but the door does not move. Or it works from three feet away but not from the driveway. Most of the time the opener is fine — the problem is power, programming, or something blocking the signal. Start here.
Check the battery first
It sounds obvious, but a weak coin cell still lights the LED on the remote. The light only proves the battery has some voltage. It does not prove it has enough current to drive the transmitter. Swap in a fresh CR2032 or CR2450 — whichever your model takes — and try again. If you have a second remote and it works, the battery in the first one is the issue. If neither remote works, move on.
The lockout switch on the wall console
Every residential opener made in the last twenty years has a “lock” or “vacation” button on the wall-mounted control panel. When it is engaged, the opener ignores every remote signal. The door will still open and close from the wall button. Someone leans against the panel, hits the lock icon, and suddenly both remotes and the keypad stop working. Press and hold the lock button for two seconds. The LED on the panel should stop flashing. Test the remote again.
Reprogram the remote to the opener
If the battery is good and the lockout is off, the remote may have lost its pairing. Power surges, a brief outage, or simply time can clear the rolling code memory.
1. Locate the Learn button on the motor head — usually a yellow, red, orange, or purple square behind the light lens. 2. Press and release it. The indicator light beside it will glow steadily for about 30 seconds. 3. While that light is on, press and hold the button on the remote you want to program. 4. Release when the opener lights flash or you hear two clicks.
Repeat for each remote. Keypads follow a similar sequence but often require a PIN entry after the Learn button press — check the sticker on the motor head for the exact steps.
Interference is real and hard to spot
Garage door remotes operate on 315 MHz or 390 MHz. So do a surprising number of household devices. LED shop lights, battery chargers, wireless security cameras, and even a neighbour’s ham radio can raise the noise floor enough that the opener never hears the remote.
The pattern is consistent: the remote works when you stand close to the door but fails from the car. To test, unplug every plugged-in device in the garage — chargers, lights, fridge, opener itself — then plug the opener back in and try the remote. If range returns, plug things back in one at a time until the remote dies again. That device is the source. Replace it with a shielded unit or move it farther from the opener antenna.
The antenna wire on the motor head
A thin wire hangs down from the opener’s logic board. That is the receiving antenna. If it has been cut, pinched against the metal housing, or coiled tightly, range drops to a few feet. It should hang straight and free, at least six inches long. Do not extend it with speaker wire — impedance mismatch makes it worse. If the wire is damaged, the logic board needs service.
Keypad-specific issues
Wireless keypads add two failure points: the keypad battery and the mounting location. A CR2032 in a keypad lasts about a year in a heated garage, less in an unheated one. Cold thickens the electrolyte and voltage sags under load. Swap the battery before troubleshooting further.
Mounting matters. A keypad screwed to a steel jamb or placed behind a metal storm door becomes a Faraday cage. Move it to a wood or vinyl surface, or use a plastic spacer block to get it off the metal.
When the opener itself is the problem
If both remotes and the keypad are dead, the lockout is off, batteries are fresh, and you have cleared interference, the receiver circuit on the logic board has likely failed. Lightning strikes and grid surges take these out regularly. The board is replaceable, but on openers older than 12 years the cost of the part plus labour approaches a new unit with a modern safety-reverse system and smartphone control.

- Opener brand and model number (sticker on the motor head)
- Which remotes work and which do not
- Whether the wall button operates the door normally
- Any recent electrical work, storms, or new devices in the garage
