How we get to Dunbar
We leave on Steveston Highway, go up Highway 99 and cross the Oak Street Bridge. Then it is Granville Street and West 57th Avenue across to West Boulevard and Dunbar Street. Most days that takes 20 to 30 minutes. Southlands down by the river is the quicker end. The streets up near West 41st Avenue take a little longer.
Dunbar runs north from the Fraser River toward English Bay on the west side of the city. It is mostly older family houses, many with a garage off the back lane.
Garage door repair Dunbar houses need
A lot of Dunbar houses are decades old and still run the first torsion spring setup and an early chain drive opener. The springs have done far more cycles than they were rated for. When one goes, the door gets heavy and the opener cannot lift it. Leave it closed and call us.
We measure the old spring and fit one that matches the door. On a two spring door we change both. The one that did not break is the same age and close behind.
Wood doors that swell
Dunbar has plenty of solid wood and carriage style doors that suit the older houses. Wood takes on water through the wet months and swells. A swollen door rubs the jamb and binds in the track. The opener strains and sometimes reverses.
We rebalance these doors and replace worn hinges and rollers without changing the look of the door. If the bottom rail has rotted we tell you what it will take before we touch it.
Old openers
Some of the openers we find in Dunbar garages predate modern safety sensors and rolling code remotes. They still run, but they do not reverse properly and the remote code can be copied. Garage door repair Dunbar calls often end with a quiet belt drive replacing one of these. We show you both prices first. Sometimes the old one only needs a board.
Lane garages and cables
Garage door repair Dunbar lane garages need is mostly cables. Detached garages off the lane sit in the damp all winter. Lift cables rust and fray at the bottom bracket. Look at the bottom corners of the door. Loose strands mean the cable is on its way out. We replace both cables and rebalance the door on the same visit.
