How to Check If Garage Door Spring Is Balanced in Richmond, BC

A balanced spring holds the door at the halfway point. You can check yours in about thirty seconds with no tools. If the door drifts up or drops hard when you release it at the midpoint, the spring tension is off — and that is the first sign of trouble.

The test itself is simple. What it tells you, and what you do about it, depends on whether you are dealing with a torsion spring (mounted on a bar above the door opening) or extension springs (running along the horizontal tracks on each side). Torsion springs are standard on most Richmond homes built after the 1980s. Extension springs are common on older builds, including the pre-1941 heritage homes in Queens Park and the Craftsman bungalows in Sapperton, where the original hardware was never upgraded.

What the balance test actually tells you

Disconnect the opener by pulling the red emergency release handle. Then lift the door manually to about the halfway point — shoulder height. Let go.

A balanced door stays put. It does not move. That is the only correct result.

If the door falls back to the floor, the springs are too weak. They are not carrying enough of the door’s weight. The opener has been doing the heavy lifting, which shortens its life and can cause premature wear on the gears, the belt or chain, and the drive sprocket.

If the door rises on its own toward the fully open position, the springs are too tight. That puts extra stress on the cables, the bottom brackets, and the spring itself. A spring wound too tight is closer to its failure point on every cycle.

A door that drifts slowly in either direction is also unbalanced. It does not have to slam. Even a slow drift means the spring tension is not matched to the door weight.

What causes a spring to lose balance

Springs do not lose balance gradually in most cases. They are wound to a specific tension based on the door’s weight, height, and track configuration. That tension stays constant through the spring’s service life — until the spring fatigues and weakens.

The weakening is not linear. A torsion spring is rated for a number of cycles, typically 10,000 for a standard residential spring or 20,000 for a high-cycle spring. Each full open-and-close cycle uses up one of those cycles. The spring loses tension very slowly for most of its life, then drops off sharply near the end. That is when the balance test starts to fail.

Other things can throw the balance off without a spring failure. A door that has been in a collision, even a minor one, can have a bent bottom section or a shifted track that changes the effective weight the springs have to lift. A door with a missing or broken panel section is lighter on one side. And a door that has had new insulation or a new opener installed without adjusting the spring tension will be unbalanced from the day the work is done.

What you can check yourself before calling anyone

You can do more than the midpoint test. Run through these checks in order. They take five minutes and they narrow down the problem.

Check the cables. With the door closed, look at the cables on both sides. They should be tight, with no fraying, and they should sit in the grooves of the bottom brackets and the cable drums. A loose cable on one side means the spring tension is unequal or a cable has slipped off the drum. Do not touch the cables. If they are loose, the spring is under tension and the cable can snap if moved.

Check the spring for gaps. On a torsion spring, look at the coils. A broken torsion spring has a visible gap where the coil is separated — usually about a quarter-inch to half-inch wide. On an extension spring, look for a spring that is stretched longer than the others or has a broken coil. A broken spring is obvious once you know what you are looking for.

Check the door movement. Lift the door manually from the bottom, about waist height. It should move smoothly with no binding, no jerking, and no scraping sounds. If it sticks or jumps, the tracks may be misaligned or the rollers may be worn. That is a separate problem from spring balance, but it can make a balanced door feel unbalanced.

Check the opener’s force settings. If the door reverses when it hits the floor or stops halfway, the opener’s force limits may need adjustment. But do not adjust them without ruling out a spring problem first. Turning up the force to compensate for weak springs is how openers burn out and how doors crush things.

Where the DIY stops

The balance test and the checks above are safe. The next step is not.

If the door is unbalanced and the springs are not visibly broken, the fix requires adjusting the spring tension. On a torsion spring, that means inserting winding bars into the winding cone and turning the spring to add or remove tension. The spring is under load — hundreds of pounds of force stored in a coiled steel bar. A slip of the winding bar releases all that energy at once. It will break bones. It will take fingers off.

On extension springs, the fix involves adjusting the cable length at the bottom bracket or moving the spring anchor point. The springs are under tension when the door is closed. A loose cable or a slipped anchor can send the spring flying across the garage.

There is no safe way for a homeowner to adjust spring tension. The tools are simple — winding bars and a socket wrench — but the risk is not in the tools. It is in the stored energy. A technician has the experience to read the spring size, calculate the correct number of quarter-turns, and know when the spring is at the right tension by feel and by measurement, not by guesswork.

What a technician checks during a spring balance service

When a technician arrives for an unbalanced door, the first thing they do is the same midpoint test you did. Then they measure the spring. They check the wire size, the inside diameter, and the length of the spring. Those three numbers determine the spring’s lifting capacity. They compare that to the door weight, which they measure with a spring scale hooked to the bottom bracket.

If the spring is the correct size but has weakened, they replace it with a spring of the same specifications. If the spring was undersized from the start — common on builder-grade doors where the cheapest spring was used — they install a properly matched spring. They also check the cables, the bottom brackets, the drums, and the track alignment while they are there, because an unbalanced door often causes secondary damage that shows up later.

The job takes about an hour for a standard residential torsion spring replacement. Extension springs are faster, usually thirty to forty-five minutes. The time depends on access, the condition of the hardware, and whether the old spring broke in a way that damaged other parts.

What drives the cost of the repair

The cost of balancing or replacing a spring depends on the spring type, the door size, and the condition of the surrounding hardware. A standard torsion spring for a single-car door is a different part than a spring for a double-wide door. A door with a high-lift track or a vertical-lift track uses a different spring configuration entirely.

The spring itself is the smallest part of the cost. The labour covers the measurement, the winding, the safety checks, and the disposal of the old spring. A door that has been running unbalanced for months may need new cables or new bottom brackets as well, because the uneven tension wears those parts out faster.

The best way to keep the cost predictable is to catch the problem early. The midpoint test costs nothing. Do it twice a year — spring and fall — and you will know the spring is still in balance before it causes damage to the opener or the door.

How to keep garage door springs balanced longer

A properly matched and installed torsion spring should last through its rated cycle count. In Richmond’s climate, with wet winters and coastal salt air, the limiting factor is often corrosion on the spring’s surface rather than metal fatigue. A spring that rusts will fail sooner than a spring that is kept clean and lubricated. A light coat of garage-door-specific lubricant on the spring once a year, applied in the fall before the rain starts, helps keep the surface corrosion at bay.

Do not lubricate the spring while it is under load. Do it during a service visit when the tension is released, or skip it entirely and let the technician handle it during annual maintenance.

The other factor is the opener. An opener with a soft-start and soft-stop feature puts less shock load on the spring than an older opener that slams the door at full speed. If you are replacing the opener anyway, it is worth considering. But the spring itself is a wear item. It will fail eventually. The goal is to catch it before it breaks, because a broken spring leaves the door on the floor and the opener running uselessly overhead.
