Short answer. LiftMaster error codes on home openers are two numbers. The UP arrow flashes first, then the DOWN arrow. Codes starting with 1 are mostly sensors and their wiring. A 2 is the logic board. Threes cover travel and battery charging, and fours mean the door stopped or reversed. Unplug the opener before you open any cover.
How to read the arrows
LiftMaster error codes on the 87504-267, 87802, 98032 and 8365W-267 all work the same way. The manuals call it self diagnostic. The UP and DOWN arrow buttons on the motor unit flash. Count the UP flashes, pause, then count the DOWN flashes. On openers with the 880LMW Smart Control Panel, the screen shows the code too, and the service menu keeps a list of past errors.

| Up | Down | Symptom | What the manual says to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | Will not close | Sensors not installed or connected, or wire cut. Inspect the sensor wires. |
| 1 | 2 | Will not close | Short or reversed sensor wire. Check every staple and connection point. |
| 1 | 3 | Wall control dead | Control wires shorted or the control is faulty. Check the wire at staples and terminals. |
| 1 | 4 | Will not close | Sensors misaligned or blocked for a moment. Realign until both LEDs hold steady. |
| 1 | 5 | Moves 6 to 8 in. and stops, or one click, or a short hum | Hand test the door for binding or a broken spring. Then travel module, board or motor in that order of symptom. |
| 1 | 6 | Coasts after stopping | Program travel to the coast position, or have the door balanced by a technician. |
| 2 | 1 to 5 | No movement or sound | Replace the logic board. |
| 3 | 1 | 98032 moves slightly then stops | Run it again. If it repeats, logic board. |
| 3 | 2 | Cannot set or hold travel | Check the travel module. On the 98032 this code can also mean reversing right before closed, and it clears after a full cycle. |
| 3 | 3 | Battery LED blinking green nonstop | Charging circuit fault, replace the logic board. |
| 4 | 1 to 4 | Stops or reverses while moving, beeps, lights flash | Hand test the door. If it does not bind, reprogram travel. |
| 4 | 5 | Runs 6 to 8 in. and reverses | Travel module communication error. Check its connections. |
| 4 | 6 | Will not close | Sensors misaligned or blocked. Realign so both LEDs are steady and not flickering. |
| 5 | 5 | 98032 will not close by Timer-to-Close or myQ | Install and program the myQ Remote LED Light. |
LiftMaster error codes in plain terms
Ones are almost always outside the motor. Think photo eyes and the thin wire that runs to them, or the wall button wire. A staple through the wire or a garden tool knocking an eye will throw a 1 code. These are the cheap ones.
Twos mean the board is not doing anything. On a DC opener we also check for a power surge history, because a board that died in a storm is common.
Threes and fours with a 5 are about the travel module, which counts motor turns to know where the door is. Fours with 1 to 4 are the opener protecting itself because the door fought back. That is the code where we find broken springs, and springs are never a homeowner job.
Lights and beeps that are not error codes
Five flashes of the work light with a beep after the door hits something is the obstruction response. The opener stopped or reversed on purpose. Two flashes of the lights when you press the remote means the travel and force setup was never finished. The command and service LEDs on the wall control flashing back and forth is the maintenance alert, set at roughly 4,500 cycles, and it is off from the factory.

A beep every 2 seconds with a solid orange battery LED is the opener running on battery. That is normal in a power cut.
Before you order a board
We would rather you not buy a logic board off a code alone. Hand test the door first. Then run the travel setup again. Then check the sensor and wall control wires end to end. Plenty of 2 codes we chase turn out to be a tripped breaker or an outlet on a switch.

Model specific notes are in the 87504-267, 87802, 98032 and 8365W-267 guides. The light curtain and monitored eye codes on commercial operators are a different system. See our LiftMaster commercial operators page.
