Short answer. LiftMaster sells two wall mount openers now, the 98022 for doors up to 850 lb and the 98032 for doors from 400 to 1,100 lb. LiftMaster lists them as the replacements for the 8500W, 8500 and 8500C. Both need a torsion spring door on a 1 inch bar. Both carry Wi-Fi with battery backup, and both use a separate myQ Remote LED Light instead of a light on the motor.
Why pick a LiftMaster wall mount opener
A LiftMaster wall mount opener frees the ceiling. That matters with a car lift, a storage rack, a high lift track or a low ceiling. It also takes the noise and vibration off the ceiling, which owners with a bedroom over the garage notice. The 98022 product guide calls it ultra quiet.
The trade off is that the door has to suit it. These are not for every door.
98022 against 98032
| 98022 | 98032 | |
|---|---|---|
| Door weight | Up to 850 lb | 400 to 1,100 lb |
| Battery | One 485LM | Two 485LM |
| Light | 827LM myQ Remote LED Light, 1,500 lumens | 837LM myQ Remote LED Light, 1,000 lumens |
| Lock | 841LM included | 841LM included |
| Replaces | 8500W, 8500 and 8500C, per LiftMaster's chart | |
The 98022 product guide notes it has no Cable Tension Monitor, which makes the install quicker. The 98022 runs a 12V DC motor with 63:1 gear reduction. LiftMaster lists Wi-Fi with Bluetooth on both.

Doors they fit
From the 98032 manual, the door needs torsion springs on a 1 inch diameter bar, and reverse wound drums are out. Standard lift sectional doors up to 14 ft high and 18 ft wide on 4 to 6 inch drums are fine. High lift up to 84 inches works with a partial taper drum, and vertical lift with an 8 inch full taper drum. The opener goes on the left or right side.
The manual also wants the torsion bar steady. No visible up and down wobble, no side to side shift as the door moves. A bent bar or a worn end bearing has to be fixed first, and that is spring hardware, so it is a technician job.
Setup that is unique to wall mount
You set a Door Profile for the drum size before you set the travel. Profiles 1 to 4 cover 4 to 6 inch drums by door weight, profile 5 is the 8 inch high lift or vertical drum.

The opener connects to the bar with a collar. A loose collar is the cause the manual gives for lost limits and for a motor that hums and quits. On the 98032 the light is not decoration. Without the myQ Remote LED Light installed, Timer-to-Close will not run. Neither will phone control. The opener shows a 5 and 5 code.
Older 8500W units
Plenty of 8500W openers are still running in Metro Vancouver. LiftMaster lists the 8500W, 8500 and 8500C as the previous models to the 98022 and 98032, and its accessory chart puts the 8500W in the yellow learn button group. We service them. When one is done, we swap in whichever current wall mount suits the door weight. We check the door against the new limits first.
Our opinion, for what it is worth. On a light single door with a normal ceiling, a wall mount is money you do not need to spend. On a heavy door or a garage with a lift, it is the best LiftMaster you can buy.
